Study to shew thyself approved: The Fix-it Shop-Filling Station

As a Christian I have heard all the reasons for not reading the Old Testament.

It’s not relevant,  now that we have Jesus.

It’s too confusing,  why are their names so hard,  and the towns?

You’ve got to be kidding.   It doesn’t make sense.   It’s too hard.

Many folks who have tried to read the Old Testament quit at or before Leviticus.

Then they use this verse for studying the Bible, only reading the New Testament.

2 Timothy 2:15
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

They fail to take into consideration,  the only book they had to study at the time this was written was the Old Testament.

I believe the first century church had power because they realized The Lord was still about righteousness,  holiness, sanctification, justification. . . .

Jesus,  saved and set us free from the law of sin and death,  and we are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.

He didn’t expect us to abandon the principles of the foundation of our faith.

2 Timothy 2:19
” Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”

Sin is Sin,  we must depart,  separate. . . Leave behind who we were and allow the Lord to transform us into His image.

Righteous,  Holy,  Separated unto His Service,  Walking in His will,  in His light,  touching all who we see with His love and Grace.

Lord,  help us to read and understand all of Your Word,  that we might be approved workmen, not ashamed,  rightly deciding You Word of Truth.

  1. Wow, preacher. I’ve never heard or thought about that verse in Timothy in connection with the OT. You are right, however. It would be a great loss to not know the OT. It does present a view of God that is very important to knowing He is the same, yesterday, today, and always. It even gives more appreciation to the NT message of grace and mercy. God has been that forever! He is also just and He despises evil.
