“Behaved himself wisely.”
David, as a young man, was chosen by the Lord to replace Saul as King. Saul hadn’t made it through his first battle, before disobeying and disappointing the Lord.
Samuel, mourned for Saul, the Lord told him He had rejected Saul, stop mourning and go find a new King.
” I have provided me a king,”
We know David was a “man after Gods own heart.”
One of the ways we see that played out is:
“He behaved himself wisely.” This phrase is written 4 times in 1Samuel 18 alone.
” David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely:
David had slain Goliath, had been splitting his time between home and Sauls service. He is now full-time in the Kings Court. He plays to calm Saul when he is troubled by an evil spirit from the Lord.
Saul made him head of the army, sent him into battle, hoping he would be killed.
” Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him, and was departed from Saul.”
The women praised David his victories, many times greater than Sauls, Saul sent him to get 100 foreskins of the Philistines, (hoping again, he would be killed).
” But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.”
David didn’t hide from the people, he was among them regularly, they loved him for this.
“David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the Lord was with him.”
He brought back 200 foreskins and married Michal, Sauls daughter.
” Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David’s enemy continually.”
Saul was becoming a problem for David:
” David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.”
David behaved wisely and the Lord was with him. Is the Lord with you? Do you behave wisely? Do you have favor with the people, do they trust in your name?
I so want to behave myself wisely, I seem to continually miss the mark. Have I washed out of the will of God?
I don’t believe so. I miss the mark, I ask forgiveness. He is faithful to forgive, cleanse, refill me with His Spirit and send me out again.
I am a man of perpetual repentance. I cannot but hope David was a screw up also. I desire to be a man after Gods own heart.
I pray that you also are quick to repent, steadfast in seeking Him. He will forgive you, forgive yourself, Praise God, go forth, the fields are ripe unto harvest.
