The first time I heard of a “sex addiction”, it was the reason a certain public figure couldn’t keep his fly zipped.
As an alcoholic, (dry for many years), I’ve always thought I was powerless against my addiction. This is the party line.
We have 12 step programs to help us defeat all sorts of addictions. Alcohol, drugs, shop lifting, smoking, sex, nose picking, finger licking, ect….
I can only come to one conclusion, these addictions are real, I know they are, I fight several daily.
So this morning I searched the Bible, to find a reason for the sin that so easily besets me.
Humm…addiction, not in the Bible
compulsion, not in the Bible
obessive, not in the Bible
….nope, didn’t see them.
Are these addictions, somehow not Biblical?
Do I need a 12 step program to be victorious over them?
(search for Bob Newheart-Stop it on Youtube)
Nope, Our problems are just things that are pleasurable to indulge in, (lust of the flesh),
pleasurable to look at, (lust of the eyes), give us a feeling of power, (the pride of life).
No I need forgiveness, deliverance, Jesus.
They are sin. We must deal with them as such. These are deliberate sins and not sins of omission.
We try to convince ourselves:
“I cann’t help it.” “I cannot control it.” “I am powerless against it.” “It just happens.”
We must learn to defeat it. Just stop it.
I am not saying, it is easy, it is not a problem, that it won’t take work, prayer, determination.
We need the Grace, Mercy and Power of God.
It really is simple to understand and hard to accomplish.
King James Version (KJV)
“For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.”
My flesh, now this is the problem. What can we do?
“Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.”
“Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?”
We must learn to yield ourselves to God.
King James Version (KJV)
“Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.”
Listen up, we must learn to:
Humbly confess our sin to God.
Ask for and accept forgiveness.
Learn to Resist the devil.
When we learn to join ourselves to Jesus, (by obedientence to righteousness), we will find the Words and Will to Resist.
Cleanse our hands.
Purify our hearts.
Get the word in our hearts and minds. Do that which is pleasing to the Lord, while denying ourselves.
If we could learn to do this, we would find true peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Lord, please give us the strength, will and power to overcome our sins. (Addictions).
Thanks for visiting. Come back soon.
Know you are loved.
