One of my favorite speakers is Tony Campolo, who is *gasp ‘a librul’! He tells the story that one day, he and his wife were visiting San Francisco, and decided to eat at a restaurant on the famous Fisherman’s Wharf. As they were entering the Wharf, they noticed s street-preacher near the entrance, shouting/preaching to passers-by.
A couple hours later, after a nice leisurely lunch, they left, and they noticed that the preacher was leading two guys in prayer. Tony made a derisive comment about the guy being an embarrassment to Christianity, being so unsophisticated. His wife responded, “He led two people to Christ. How many did you lead while eating lunch?”
All too often, we Christians are like the ones described in a Ganble Rogers story: “They’ll do anything for the Lord, as long as it’s not tacky.”
