In this section, I will be giving a lot of scriptures. …
For to one is given by the Spirit discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues.
For the best example of discerning of Spirits, we need to look at King Saul. ..
He couldn’t decern but those around him could.
1 Samuel 16:14 King James Version (KJV)
But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.
1 Samuel 16:15 King James Version (KJV)
And Saul’s servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.
1 Samuel 19:20. King James Version (KJV)
And Saul sent messengers to take David: and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as appointed over them, the Spirit of God was upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied.
1 Samuel 28:3. King James Version (KJV)
Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. And Saul had put away those that had familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land.
1 Samuel 28:7-20 King James Version (KJV)
Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and enquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor. And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die?
And Saul sware to her by the Lord, saying, As the Lord liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing.
Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel.
And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul.
And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth.
And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself.
And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.
Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the Lord is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?
And the Lord hath done to him, as he spake by me: for the Lord hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour, even to David:
Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the Lord, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the Lord done this thing unto thee this day.
Moreover the Lord will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and to-morrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me: the Lord also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.
Then Saul fell straightway all along on the earth, and was sore afraid, because of the words of Samuel: and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all the day, nor all the night.
1 Chronicles 10:13 King James Version (KJV)
So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the Lord, even against the word of the Lord, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it;
We also have New Testament examples:
Acts 16:16-18 King James Version (KJV)
16 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:
17 The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.
18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.
Here we have Paul receiving a Word of Wisdom while discerning a Spirit.
Acts 21:4 King James Version (KJV)
4 And finding disciples, we tarried there seven days: who said to Paul through the Spirit, that he should not go up to Jerusalem.
Next we have divers kinds of tongues:
This is primarily a New Testament experience, it is evidence of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit:
Mark 16:17 King James Version (KJV)
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues.
If we try to see all the scriptures at once, it might seem confusing. I believe if we look at a day at a time it will be less so. Let us start with the Day of Pentecost:
The 120 were gathered together at one place, in one accord:
Acts 2 King James Version (KJV)
2 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
The first recorded instance of tongues spoken was men of God speaking languages they did not know so that people of these countries and cultures would hear and believe in God.
1. speaking human language, otherwise not known… To lead to God
Acts 2:1 1King James Version (KJV)
11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
Peter sent to Cornelius house to explain the Gospel to the Gentiles:
Acts 10:44-48 King James Version (KJV)
44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?
48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.
2. Gentiles received the baptism of the Holy Spirit with evidence of speaking in tongues. (was this other human languages? We do not know.)
We next see the Gifts of Tongues:
Acts 19:1- 6 King James Version (KJV)
19 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism.
4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
This indicates to me that we indeed received the Holy Spirit when we were saved….120 believers, have you received since you believed? The Baptism of the Spirit is an amazing, extra God offers….it is available to all who believe, who would accept and act on it. The evidence is the speaking in other tongues. This is hard for people to let The Spirit take control of our tongues and speak what sounds like gibberish.
This brings us to 1 Corinthians 12-14, where Paul explains the gifts and let’s us know why they were given:
So we would live fruitful and abundant lives, he wants us to understand and walk in the Gifts of the Spirit.
As we read through 1 Corinthians 12-14 we find the gifts being abused, people being scared off by misuse of the Spirit. That is why the Love chapter is in the middle of the gifts…We must desire Spiritual. Gifts but use them in love. We have all heard chapter 13 preached to death.
1 Corinthians 14 King James Version (KJV)
14 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
5 I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
Here we understand the gift of Tongues is to speak to God not man. It is In the Interpretation that the church is edified. I speak in tongues, pray to God, but I have never felt comfortable interpreting. I do not believe the Spirit has given me that gift.
1 Corinthians 14:14 King James Version (KJV)
14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.
This to me is one if the greatest gifts, my spirit prayeth what I need, not my mind….minds always get us into trouble.
Then we must pray to interpret. …so the church would be edified. We need to do all, decently and in order that God would be glorified and lifted up, then all men will be drawn to Him.
1 Corinthians 12:27-31 King James Version (KJV)
27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.
28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?
30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.
Here I believe we find them more than. Just Gifts to us but tools of ministry to others…I believe the Gifts of the Spirit were the talents that the Master left and expected the people to increase. …What have you done with your talents?
