The Spirit : The Fix-it Shop

I had pulled this post after I realized their was only one Greek word used for Spirit in the New Testament. After further study, I decided to leave it up for discussion. In Ezekiel I found The Lord giving a new heart and new spirit.

Maybe I am right.

Strongs number 4151: Greek Dictionary of the New Testament
“Spirit: pneuma: a current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or a breeze; by anal. or fig. A spirit, i.e. (human) the rational soul, (by impl.) Vital principle, mental disposition, ect., or (superhuman ) an angel, demon, or (devine) God, Christ’s spirit, the Holy Spirit :-ghost, life, spirit (-ual,-ually), mind.”

I feel I may well be right.

We have looked  at The Spirit of God and The Spirit of the Lord and seen the different Natures of the Godhead,  now we should look at the New Testament Spirit.
The Holy Spirit which is found so named, in only 3 verses of the Old Testament, in Psalm 51 and in Isaiah 63, all three times  is being grieved. We find the Holy Ghost  (KJV) listed 89 times in the New Testament.
The people of God are called to live: In the Spirit;  By the Spirit; and Through the Spirit
If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.  We are justified in the Spirit.
We should be led by the Spirit,  Prophesy by the Spirit , we are given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; We are quickened by the Spirit:
We hear the voice of God, through the Spirit, through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body,
we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.  We also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
These are only a few of the verses concerning our lives with the Holy Spirit,  (capital S).  We need to examine how we work by our human spirit, (small s).  This may be another “Billism”, so study the Word and you decide.
The first I find  in New Testament is speaking of John the Baptist :
“he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias“
John, shall go before Jesus in the spirit and power of Elijah.   The  story of Elijah is interesting,  the first we hear of him, he is confronting  King Ahab.  1 Kings 17
“It will not rain untill I say so”.  Or words to that effect.
Then we find the Lord speaking to him for the first time.
“Get out of there and hide”  (both bill translations)
It is my contention that like Enoch and Noah, Elijah knew and acted on the will of God,  he had received a word of knowledge  (it won’t rain), then a word of wisdom  (run and hide).
His actions were dictated by his spirit.  We see it also in the life of Jesus.
When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.
His human spirit was troubled,  He knew in His heart and mind He was God and would raise him from the dead,  He groaned in His human spirit.
We see it in Paul, he knew the will of God, his desire to please God drove him.
Paul was pressed in the spirit,  Paul purposed in the spirit,  I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem
Apollos :  Again, fervent,  desire to serve….
This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.
All of us:
and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter;
in the spirit of meekness?
he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness;
in the spirit of your mind
we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit,
am I with you in the spirit,
live according to God in the spirit.
I believe these are speaking of our human spirit,  we must purpose in our spirit to seek the Spirit of God.
As we read the Word,  we need to ask the Holy Spirit to teach and guide us to His  truth.  Be expecting a quickening in your spirit.
Study to shew thyself approved unto God.

  1. Just a short ramble here: It intrigues me how dunned the Christian belief system is as we seek to live “in the world, but not of the world”. Any failing on the part of a believer is quickly magnified, and held up as an example of hypocrisy. Eastern belief systems are held up as having adherents who are much more ‘spiritual’ as they live fastidiously separated from the world around them. I think it is just exactly this tightwire balance between the pursuit of spirituality, and living among the populace, that makes Christianity simultaneously repulsive and attractive.

Just an observation; and I am often accused of stating the obvious. But sometimes I think the obvious needs to be stated or it gets lost in the supposed. I think believers should, and mostly do, pursue the work of the Spirit in their lives, identifying how they are gifted and how their gifts should be exercised. The breakdown comes when we forget that we are all sinners, saved by Grace, and fail to exercise graciousness with each other, believer or not.
