Concerning spiritual gifts

Gifts of God

The gifts of God are many and varied.  From victory in war to land, to rest for the people.   New heart for King Saul, wisdom, understanding and

knowledge for Solomon,  all that plus understanding of dreams for Daniel.

God so loved the world He gave His only begotten son, as many as received Him, He gave power to be sons of God.  Everlasting life.

Jesus gave His life, for us….He sent His Spirit to teach, guide, direct, protect, comfort, give us peace, love and joy.  So great, why do we not accept the Spirits gifts?

God told Moses, that He would do mighty signs and wonders, miracles so that Egypt would see and understand that He is Lord.

In Isaiah 41 God goes a step further.
“That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the Lord hath done this, and the Holy One of Israel hath created it.”

God has not changed, if Jesus needed signs and wonders to draw people to Himself, how much more do we need them today.

As Christians,  the Gifts of the Spirit are available to us today. We need to look in the Bible recognize when and how they were displayed, ask the Lord to begin to teach us to be open to them.

In my series Concerning Spiritual Gifts, I try to point out what they are and who used them.  I hope to do a broader study on vidio in the not to distant future.

I would not have you ignorant.

“Ignorance is bliss”   How often have we heard and at times believed this?    In   truth ignorance robs us of many blessings.

In  1 Corinthians 12,  Paul tells us:

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.

Growing up I went religiously to Church and Catechism.    I don’t remember the Gifts of the Spirit being taught.

The crucifixion, resurrection,  love, forgiveness,  the 10 commandments, rituals, creeds and church holidays.  I was ignorant, I was never taught that Jesus is a personal God, that I could meet Him. today, of the power that shall follow those who believe, or the Gifts of the Spirit.

Even in born again churches,  unless we attend  Bible Studies and search the scriptures ourselves the Gifts are hardly mentioned, never mind  taught.  This is no one’s fault, just a matter of priorities.  Why teach on something that appears to have passed away with the Apostles.

My Bible states that,   Jesus Christ,  the same yesterday, today and forever.

These signs shall follow them that believe.  In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

The  Lords words seem empty..  I can speak with  other tongues,  I certainly battle the Serpent,  (he often gets the better of me).  I’m not in the habit of drinking anything questionable and some that I lay hands on recover.

.In Mark 6 it states Jesus could not do mighty works because of their unbelief.   He could only heal a few sick folk.  To me that is the state of the Church today.  We see  little of the power of God.

How do we correct this problem?   I think we should start by recognizing  and  studying  the Gifts of the Spirit in the Word,   whenever mentioned in the Word..

I would not have you ignorant.

There are many things of which most of us are happily ignorant.

For instance how to pilot the USS Ronald Reagan.  Exactly how electricity works.  The reason

my car runs, as long as I can start it and drive.

After all “Ignorance is bliss”:

The Apostle Paul thought differently:  Four times he wrote:  “I would not have you ignorant.” (once)  of death and resurrection.  He wants us sure of God’s love grace, salvation and Eternal Life, even as our bodies die.

Of his travails (twice).  Detained  Paul wanted those expecting him, to comforted, so he explained.

“Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. ”

So we would live fruitful and abundant lives, he wants us to understand and walk in the Gifts of the Spirit.

“Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit

And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.

And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worked all in all.  But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.”  1 Corinthians 12:4-7

The manifestation of the Spirit:  (a public demonstration of power and purpose) is given to every man to profit withal.

This Scripture breaks the Godhead down nicely to my mind.

It is the Lords will, the Sons action, by the power of the Holy Spirit, that we are to attend to the Lord s business. To do this successfully, we need to understand and work in the Gifts we have been given.

Many of us may have one of the Gifts at any one time, as they as needed.  Some may have access to several as the Spirit wills.

“For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;”

Let us clearly understand that the word of; is different from blanket knowledge or wisdom. We acquire Wisdom or Knowledge by lifes lessons and studying, the Word of Knowledge and the Word of Wisdom are given supernaturally.

“And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,  See, I have called by name Bezaleel  And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, And I, behold, I have given with him Aholiab and in the hearts of all that are wise hearted I have put wisdom, that they may make all that I have commanded thee;  The tabernacle of the congregation, and the ark of the testimony, and the mercy-seat that is thereupon, and all the furniture of the tabernacle.”  (verses from Exodus 31 )

Notice the Lord filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge for the building and supply of His Tabernacle in the desert.

These Gifts were given for a specific time and place, to carry out a specific task.  We know that we are to seek Wisdom and Knowledge and that they come from the Lord.

“I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek wisdom, and the reason of things,”  Ecclesiastes 7:25

And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things ”   Ecclesiastes 1:13
For the desire thereof he will [a]separate himself to seek it, and occupy himself in all wisdom.   Proverbs 18:1   1599 Geneva Bible (GNV)

“But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.  1 Corinthians 1:24

Jesus is the manifestation and the wisdom of the power of God. When we seek Jesus we are seeking the Wisdom and Power of God. We will find Him when we need Him as we need to breathe.

Jesus said: “This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.”

The people who walk in the Spirit are those who will carry out much in the Kingdom.

The story of Joseph gives an example of the Word of Wisdom.

Joseph was a dreamer and interpreter of dreams, partly because of this,  while in prison  he found favour in the sight of his keepers.  When Pharaoh had a dream and he needed the interpretation,  Joseph consulted :

Joseph said:   “It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace.”

Joseph received from God the interpretation, a Word of Wisdom.  Because of the blessing of the Lord, Joseph was able to explain the dream and became second only to Pharaoh and ruled all of Egypt.

The Lord was with Joseph and blessed Egypt for his sake and made him a prosperous man and gave him favour.

The Word of Knowledge is to know a truth from God you would otherwise not know and a Word of Wisdom is to know and understand how to use this information.

In the book of Daniel, we find the four Hebrew children:  God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.  The king found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers.

The king had a dream that he could not remember.  He called his magicians and astrologers and wanted an interpretation. They answered:  “Tell us your dream and we will tell you what it means. “

He answered: ”Tell me the dream, than I will believe your interpretation.”

Daniel consulted:  He asked for time, went to his home, told the three children, prayed that  God would  show the secret. They than blessed God.

Daniel had received the message of the dream,  The Word of Knowledge and he was also able to interpret,  The Word of Wisdom.

There are many more examples of both the Word of Knowledge and the Word of Wisdom in the Bible:

Jesus saw Nathaniel under the fig tree, the disciples in fear on the boat, Peter knew of the couples lie to the Holy Spirit that resulted in their deaths.

These are some examples of the Word of Knowledge.

Elijah and Joseph, both took a diferant path and Rahab told the messenger of God to go back another way.

This was the Word of Wisdom and the faith to believe it that saved them all.

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever. The gifts and calling of God are without repentance. Without repentance means are irrevocable, they are alive, well and available to whosoever will.

As you read the Bible, look for and recognize the Gifts at work, only then, will we learn to use them.

I would not have you ignorant.

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.

We are naturally ignorant of other languages, higher math skills, sports or any particular subject,  that doesn’t mean that we are stupid.  All it means is we are not knowledgeable in that area.

After all, we cannot be expected to know what we haven’t experienced or been taught. The Apostle is encouraging us to learn about and walk in the light of the Spirit. Our natu

ral man knows nothing of the Spirit. The Bible tells us it is foolishness to him, that he cannot know them because it is Spirituality discerned.

In the last chapter we looked at the Gifts of Word of Knowledge and the Word of Wisdom.  In this chapter we will delve into the following.

To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

The Gift of Faith is not the faith of simple belief in our Lord for salvation. The Gifts are given always to fulfill a specific need at a specific time.

Abram had asked of the Lord;  Since I have no children, will my servant be my heir?  The Lord answered;  A child will be born out of your own body.

And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

This wasn’t faith that the Lord exists, he knew that, he was speaking to Him, but faith in the promise the Lord had given. Like Enoch before him.  He believed God is and is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.

The account of Daniel and the three Hebrew children has several examples of the Gift of Faith.

Daniel showed the Gift of Faith, when he would not defile himself with the kings abundance.  Again when he prayed and ended up in the lion’s den.

It is the Hebrew children who teach us the most about the Gift.  Refusing to bow to the kings statue, the king asks who will save them from the fiery furnace?

Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king  But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

Our God is able to deliver us and our God will deliver us and if He doesn’t we will still serve Our God.   As servants of God, they also, like Abram and Enoch believed that God is and He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.

This is what our attitude should always be.  It is impossible to receive the Gift of Faith, without walking with the Lord.

In the New Testament we have examples also.  Peter at the gate beautiful had the Gift of Faith when he pulled the lame man to his feet.   When he walked on water, at Pentecost to preach to the multitudes.

Paul showed us the Gift, during the ship wreck, while held prisoner, on the island, before the rulers.

There are many other examples of the Gifts in action,  we just need to read and recognize their use.

How about the Gifts of Healing?

This is interesting to note, it is Gifts not Gift. This is because we need healing in so many areas.  Physically, emotionally, financially in relationships with God and man. The healings that God has done, really are incredible. Here are some samples.

Barren women giving birth:

–  The women of Egypt after Abram prayed

–  Hannah gave birth to Samuel after prayer

–  Manoah’s wife was barren and Samson was born

–  Mary with Jesus ….immaculate conception

Healings

– The woman   afflicted with t  he issue of  blood  touched the border of Jesus’s garment: and as many as touched him were whole.

– Some that touched Pauls garments.

those who were but touched by Peter and John’s shadows

It doesn’t matter what kind of healing we need, our real need is to learn how to touch Jesus.

The Lord makes many promises to heal.

– heal the brokenhearted

– heal the land.

– heal the waters

– heal the sick

For I am the Lord that healeth thee.

If you need a financial healing, God promises that if you tithe, He will bless you in abundance

The power of God to heal all of us and all our ills is Awesome.

Sometimes Gods Gifts come with conditions we must meet, as long as we are walking with Him, the Spirit will comfort, teach and guide us ever closer to the Holy of Holies,  Jesus Christ. We will learn to use the gifts that the Spirit provides.

“We are all born ignorant, but one must work hard to remain stupid.”       Benjamin Franklin

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.

For to one is given by the Spirit, the working of miracles;

God had His reasons for the gifts of the Spirit. In Isaiah 41:20.

That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the Lord hath done this, and the Holy One of Israel hath created it.

The gifts should be on full display today;   so people would see, know, consider, understand and believe that God is! We see this even in the order the gifts are listed:

     ▪   Word of Wisdom, Word of Knowledge
As believers our first job is to learn to listen.  Receive His instructions.
▪    Gift of Faith
After learning what and how,  He gives the Faith to do.
▪     Gifts of Healing
This is when nonbelievers begin to see the gospel at work.   They see with their eyes, know in their hearts,
▪     Working of miracles
They begin to consider and  to understand in their minds.
▪     Prophesy,    Discerning of Spirits,  divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
They then will believe our words.

Gods plans and directions always make sense.   We need to learn to do things His way.   Mark 6 once again:  We see mighty things, God says I could only heal a few sick….because of unbelief.   We have unbelief because we want to do it our way.  When we insist on doing things our  way, God cannot do all He wants,  we must do things Gods way.

Please note the last thing we should do is speak.  I would guess my mouth has driven more from, than to Christ.

“That people will see, know, consider, understand and believe that God is.”

Jesus told us:  “These signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;  They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”

If the purpose of miracles was so that people would ultimately believe on Him, why are we not seeing miracles today. After all Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever.

Many are thinking:  Wait a minute, I’ve had miracles happen in my life.  I know this is true but remember when Jesus went into his hometown, he couldn’t do mighty works,  because of their unbelief.  He could only heal a few sick folks.

That is where we are today, we only see a few receiving miracles. The book tells Jesus healed all that were affected.  He told us to speak to the mountain and believe and it would be cast into the sea.

We do not see this today,  Jesus and the Apostles had multiples come to be saved, healed and delivered.  Today if we don’t feel well, we stay home, after all we won’t be healed at church, God doesn’t do that anymore.

Another reason we don’t see the Gifts at work today is the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life. We all desire things: cars, boats, TV’s or praise because we are so really special.

It’s a me, me, me world, we are bombarded daily, buy this, you need that, you cannot live without the new electric, computer operated hand and foot washer with the optional ear and belly button cleaner and polisher.  (equipped to service both ears, at no extra charge). Only $69.95.  Payable in three easy paymens, of $23.31 a month. (shipping and handling are separate).  How could we resist?
The
God has a better idea.

God desires that we seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, then all these things will be added to us. We cannot change the world, when we won’t change ourselves. We need to pray as David did.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.  Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.”

The question today is:  How to activate the Gifts and Power of God in our lives today?  I long to look behind and see signs and wonders following.  For Christ to be lifted up, the lame walk, the disabled made whole.

“For people to see, know, consider, understand and believe that God is!”

The answer is take the heroes of the Bible off their pedestals,  realize they were flesh and blood like us. The only true difference is they understood and obeyed the Holy Spirit, not the flesh. Their hunger and thirst was for a relationship, not earthy things.

If we look at Joshua:  We find that far fewer miracles occurred during his leadership of the Hebrews but he was with Moses through out the Exodus.   Take a look at his appearances:

■  He was Moses trusted second in command

■  Moses General in battle.  (Lord is my banner)

■  Recipient of God s word through Moses.

■  With Moses when the ten comments were given.  (40 day fast?).

■  Beside Moses with sons of Levi.  (golden calf over 2000 died).

■  Back up the mountain, (rewrite of ten comments), stayed pwith the Lord,  when Moses went down.

■  Sent to search promiced land.  One of two that gave a good report.

■  Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the Lord commanded Moses.

■  Lord spake unto Joshua the son of Nun.

■  Led Hebrews into promised land

■  Only suffered one defeat in war.

His reaction to defeat was to realize there w a s sin in the camp.  He called the people together to do the following:

●  Confess

●  Consecrate themselves

●  Be sanctified

●  Stoned the sinner

Sounds like the sinners prayer to me.  Right up to the death of the old man.

“Joshua; left nothing undone of all that the Lord commanded Moses.”

brethren, I would not have you ignorant.

For to one is given by the Spirit, prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

prophecy:

13 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

The gifts where we speak;  Lord help me are the scariest gifts to work.  Perhaps it is a lack of faith on my part.  I love to preach the Word of God, share the promises o f God but jump out there to say thus says the Lord; interpret tongues.

I just don’t think the Spirit has annointed me in this area.  I am more than confident to proclaim the truth of His written word but the other is a limb that scares me.

Definition of Prophesy and Prophets:

“Prophet

The ordinary Hebrew word for prophet is nabi, derived from a verb signifying “to bubble forth” like a fountain; hence the word means one who announces or pours forth the declarations of God. The English word comes from the Greek prophetes (profetes), which signifies in classical Greek one who speaks for another, especially one who speaks for a god, and so interprets his will to man; hence its essential meaning is “an interpreter.” The use of the word in its modern sense as “one who predicts” is post-classical. The larger sense of interpretation has not, however, been lost.

Scripture have been drawn out by Locke as follows: “Prophecy comprehends three things: prediction; singing by the dictate of the Spirit; and understanding and explaining the mysterious, hidden sense of Scripture by an immediate illumination and motion of the Spirit.” Order and office .-

l. Teaching by act and teaching by word were alike their task. But during the time of the judges, the priesthood sank into a state of degeneracy, and the people were no longer affected by the acted lessons of the ceremonial service.

They required less enigmatic warnings and exhortations, under these circumstances a new moral power was evoked the Prophetic Order. Samuel himself Levite of the family of Kohath, (1 Chronicles 6:28) and almost certainly a priest, was the instrument used at once for effecting a reform in the sacerdotal order (1 Chronicles 9:22) and for giving to the prophets a position of importance which they had never before held. Nevertheless it is not to be supposed that Samuel created the prophetic order as a new thing before unknown.

s .–What then are the characteristics of the sixteen prophets thus called and commissioned and intrusted with the messages of God to his people

+ They were the national poets of Judea.

+ They were annalists and historians. A great portion of Isaiah, of Jeremiah, of Daniel of Jonah, of Haggai, is direct or in direct history.

+ They were preachers of patriotism,–their patriotism being founded on the religious motive.

+ They were preachers of morals and of spiritual religion. The system of morals put forward by the prophets, if not higher or sterner or purer than that of the law, is more plainly declared, and with greater, because now more needed, vehemence of diction.

+ They were extraordinary but yet authorized exponents of the law.

+ They held a pastoral or quasi-pastoral office.

+ They were a political power in the state.

+ But the prophets were something more than national poets and annalists, preachers of patriotism moral teachers, exponents of the law, pastors and politicians. Their most essential characteristic is that they were instruments of revealing God’s will to man, as in other ways, so specially by predicting future events, and in particular foretelling the incarnation of the Lord Jesus Christ and the redemption effected by him. We have a series of prophecies which are so applicable to the person and earthly life of Jesus Christ as to be thereby shown to have been designed to apply to him. And if they were designed to apply to him, prophetical prediction is proved. Objections have, been urged. We notice only one, vis., vagueness. It has been said that the prophecies are too darkly and vaguely worded to be proved predictive by the events which they are alleged to foretell. But to this might be answered,

+ That God never forces men to believe,

but that there is such a union of definiteness and vagueness in the prophecies as to enable those who are willing to discover the truth, while the willfully blind are not forcibly constrained to see it.

+ That, had the prophecies been couched in the form of direct declarations, their fulfillment would have thereby been rendered impossible or at least capable of frustration.

+ That the effect of prophecy would have been far less beneficial to believers, as being less adapted to keep them in a state of constant expectation.

+ That the Messiah of revelation could not be so clearly portrayed in his varied character as God and man, as prophet, priest and king, if he had been the mere teacher.”

+ That the state of the prophets, at the time of receiving the divine revelation, was such as necessarily to make their prdictions fragmentary figurative, and abstracted from the relations of time.

+ That some portions of the prophecies were intended to be of double application, and some portions to be understood only on their fulfillment, Comp. (John 14:29; Ezekiel 36:33)”  -SMITHS BIBLE NAME DICTIONARY-

Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?

Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet sh.ew I unto you a more excellent way.

And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.

For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he ftspeaketh mysteries.

But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrin

And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?

For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?

So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.

There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.

Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.

I guess the only thing I can say about prophesy in the New Testament is that it is to edify, exhort and comfort, not so much predictions and condemnation as in the Old Testament.   I would welcome clarification.

Geat Commission; Tongues : The Fix-it Shop

Mark 16:15-20
King James Version (KJV)
And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;   They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.   And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

I believe Jesus wants all of this to happen. That it isn’t, isn’t the fault of Jesus.

This is alot of Scripture. …please feel free to question.

Acts 2:1-8
King James Version (KJV)
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.  And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.  And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.

Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born.

Acts 10:42-48
King James Version (KJV)
And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.

To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.  While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,

Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?  And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain

Acts 19:1-7
King James Version (KJV)
And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,

He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism.

Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.  And all the men were about twelve.

Acts 19:11-12
King James Version (KJV)
And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:

So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.

Tongues and interpretation are for edification of the church…in public must have interpretation. They heard them magnify God and Prophesy.

Romans 8:26
King James Version (KJV)
Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Jude 1:20
King James Version (KJV)
But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost.

Romans  and Jude are speaking of our private prayer language.  We know not what to pray, the Spirit knows and builds our faith.

Below are selected verses from 1 Corinthians,  please read the full chapters 12-14.

1 Corinthians 12
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.  Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.  And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.

But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;  To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

Notice for the Word of Knowledge and Word of Wisdom,  we must learn to hear, then  we will have the Special Faith to work in the Spirit. He is speaking about public prayer in tongues,  must interpret.

But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

Notice how the church has gone from do all?.. To none.  The church is buying the Talents or Gifts of God.

1 Corinthians 13
King James Version (KJV)
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.  But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

(That which is perfect is the second coming of Christ, he is giving instructions to an out of control church. ..this is how it is supposed to be).

When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

1 Corinthians 14
Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.

For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

( edified self).

I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.

Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.

For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?

For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.  (Giving thanks)

I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:

Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.

In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.

Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?

But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:

And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.

How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.

But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.  Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.

If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.  For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.

And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law.

And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.  What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?

If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.

Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.  Let all things be done decently and in order.

It is interesting the spirits ofthe prophets are subject to the prophets. ….we find tongues magnify, and prophesied,  in public with interpretation.

In private,  they edify, give thanks, speak to God our spirit to His Spirit,  that what we know not.  Our faith is built up by praying in the Spirit.

I would not have you ignorant.

    • They are manifested at the Holy Spirits will and He does will us to use them. I believe the gifts of the Spirit are the talents (currency ), the Master left His servants than came back to reward those who multiplied them.

Speaking in tongues is I believe the gateway to the gifts. From Babal to Pentecost first time separate people, second to draw people to Him.

Have you received the Holy Spirit since you believed?
